New Corktown bar to bring duckpin bowling and self-serve taps to Michigan Avenue

A recent retiree is doing something a lot of people talk about but few actually do: Open a bar.

Ron Moore and his wife Michele are investing $2.4 million into Corktown Taphouse inside the Perennial Corktown apartment complex at 1611 Michigan Ave. The bar is slated to open this summer.

Corktown Taphouse will have 70 self-service taps for beer, wine and seltzers and feature activities such as duckpin bowling and darts. Food will come from two separate kitchens.

The 7,900-square-foot family-friendly bar will have seating for 160-175 guests and a staff of 12-15 employees.

Ron Moore, formerly COO of Schwan’s Home Delivery, and his wife have been thinking about starting a business for some time, he said in a news release. Their son Mitchell introduced them to Corktown.

“My wife, son, and I wanted to create something that can be a focal point in the community,” Moore said in the release. “We want to be a part of Corktown and to make the space welcoming and fun for everyone in the neighborhood.”

Mitchell Moore will be the director of operations at Corktown Taphouse.

Corktown Taphouse is the latest food and drink business to set up in Perennial Corktown, including bodega-style grocery Corktown Market and Dearborn-based Haraz Coffee House.

Perennial Corktown is a venture from developer Hunter Pasteur, the Forbes Co. and Oxford Capital Group. The $93 million, mixed-use development features 195 apartments, including seven townhomes, each with their own third-floor private rooftop deck. A second phase — a conversion of a nearby storage facility into 28 lofts — is also planned.

Hunter Pasteur CEO Randy Wertheimer said the group is excited to add Corktown Taphouse to the Perennial development.

“Corktown Taphouse brings something unique to Perennial Corktown and the neighborhood,” Wertheimer said. “This adds so much to our residents’ living experience and gives the neighborhood a new space to relax and enjoy with friends and family.”
