Northville mansion back on the market five months after being sold at auction

Less than six months after selling at auction, a storied Northville mansion is back on the market.

Dubbed “Castello Montebello,” the home was purchased late last year at auction for just over $2.9 million by a trust connected to Dr. Ali Rezai, associate dean of neuroscience at West Virginia University. Rezai purchased the property site unseen, according to Signature Sotheby’s listing agent Dylan Tent, but ultimately decided to test the market and listed the property this week for $3.4 million.

The new asking price represents a premium of about 17% over what Rezai paid at auction last year. Rezai was not available for comment and it’s unclear whether improvements were made to the home and property since his purchase.

The approximately 15,000-square-foot home built in 2000 on over two acres just blocks from downtown Northville “offers both privacy and convenience,” and is situated on what the listing agent claims is the highest point in Wayne County, per the listing copy.

“Designed for the most discerning buyer, the residence boasts 7 bedrooms, 7.2 bathrooms, and an array of world-class amenities,” the listing says. That includes myriad security measures, an elevator and a replica of New York City’s Paramount Movie Palace.

The home, which boasts a colorful history, was previously owned by Dr. Thomas Prose, who had it on and off the market for years.

Under Prose’s ownership, the home was host to presidents and dignitaries and, for a short time, used as a consulate for the Czech Republic, something Prose previously told Crain’s brought property tax benefits.

“This is a home that only takes one buyer who wants this lifestyle, who wants this location. This is the premier home in western Wayne and eastern Washtenaw counties,” Prose told Crain’s in early 2023. “So if that buyer comes by tomorrow, the home is theirs. But I just can’t judge (the market). It’s going to require somebody that wants that home and that lifestyle.”
